Fallujah Recaptured but ISIS in Iraq far from Defeated – Blasts Kill 83 in Baghdad

nsnbc : Only one week after Iraqi PM al-Abadi raised the flag in the center of the liberated city of Fallujah, two blasts in the capital Baghdad ripped away the lives of 83 and injured at least twice as many. The struggle against the self-proclaimed Islamic State is far from over and persists throughout the country.

The first blast went off in the Karrada district of the capital Baghdad. Interior Ministry spokesman Saad Maan confirmed that the first blast had come from a car bomb. Shortly after the explosion hit Karrada, eyewitnesses reported that a second blast had went off in the Shaab neighborhood, which is located in the northern part of the city. Interior Ministry spokesman Saad Maan reported the  first explosion was caused by a car bomb.

The fatal attacks believed to have been carried out by the self-proclaimed Islamic State are believed to have been meant as a signal to the central government to announce that the victory in Fallujah does not mean that ISIS has been defeated.

The organization that started as a relatively small branch of Al-Qaeda has shown surprising adaptability and it most analysts agree that this adaptability means that it may take years before it eventually can be defeated. Another “plus” for ISIS is, without doubt, its ties to deep State networks in Arab, Western and Asian countries.

The presence of ISIS throughout Iraq and its varied use of strategies and resources can, among others, be assessed by successful operations by or against the insurgents. On Saturday the Federal Police Command reported that it had dismantled a large workshop for the production of booby-trapped vehicles in Nezal, in central Fallujah.

Also on Saturday a high-ranking Iraqi officer in Ramadi was shot and killed by a sniper. A military source reported that “The commander of the 41st brigade of the Army’s Tenth Division was killed by an ISIS sniper in Khalediya Island (23 km east of Ramadi). .. The officer was killed after the security forces advanced into Khalediya Island, east of Ramadi, with an aim to liberate it.”

On the same day a source from the Ministry of Interior revealed that an employee of the Ministry of Migration and Displacement was gunned down by unidentified gunmen in eastern Baghdad. The incident, also believed to be linked to ISIS, took place at al-Canal Street in eastern Baghdad and the employee, who was in his private vehicle when shot at, died on the spot.

Military operations against ISIS also reveal the presence of the militants throughout the country. Khalidiya Island has recently been liberated, but low intensity combat and isolated attacks continue. Military operations are also being conducted some 10 kilometers from Sharqat, north of Tikrit and other regions. Ironically, Turkish military jets, on Saturday, launched a one-hour-long air raid against positions of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) north of Dohuk. The PKK and northern Iraqi Peshmerga are on the forefront of the fight against ISIS in northern Iraq.
