FARC leader Rodrigo Londono a.k.a. Timochenko to run in Colombia’s 2018 presidential elections

nsnbc : The FARC launched its political party in 2017 using the acronym FARC for Revolutionary Alternative Forces of Colombia. The party was founded in September 2017 after the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia – People’s Army (FARC-EP) demobilized and disarmed under the provisions of the peace accord signed between the State and the FARC-EP in December 2016.

Timochenko_Londono_FARC_2017While Londono will run for the presidency, the FARC’s congressional campaign will be led by Luciano Marin a.k.a. Ivan Marquez. Marin served as Congressman during the former – failed – attempted peace process in the 1980s. He assumed the FARC party leadership in September 2017.

In 2016 the former guerrilla said they would not participate in the 2018 presidential elections but endorse a mainstream candidate who would guarantee the success of the ongoing peace process.

A source close to the FARC leadership told nsnbc international that Londono and the FARC didn’t deviate from their plan to endorse another candidate, but that Londono’s run for the presidency provides an important platform for the party to convey its post-conflict politics to the electorate.

Marin_Marquez_FARC_Sep 2017_ColombiaIt is, at this point in time, also uncertain whether Rodrigo Londono will be allowed to enter the presidential elections before he has been submitted to the transitional justice system established under the peace accord. That decision depends on Congress that has been mulling the transitional justice bill for months.

Londono could be sentenced for human rights violations committed during the civil war but it is still unclear how an eventual sentence would be served. There may be a max sentence of eight years where incarceration will be reserved only for a few who committed the most violent acts while community service is the referred modality.

One could of course say “what greater community service then to serve all Colombians as president could there possibly be” but chances are that some 50 percent of Colombians would disagree with that claim and demand that convicts be excluded from holding office.

The FARC will also run candidates for the lower house in five districts. The party reiterated its willingness to form a coalition with other leftist parties. ‘We manifest our willingness to hold talks with all social-political groups and movements to make united lists,’ the FARC said in a statement. The FARC is guaranteed 10 seats in Congress through 2026 by the peace accord, regardless of its success in elections. Among senate candidates will be former guerrilla commanders Ivan Marquez, Pablo Catatumbo, Carlos Antonio Lozada and Victoria Sandino, the FARC said Wednesday.
