FARC leader Rodrigo Londono in hospital after stroke


nsnbc : The leader of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia – People’s Army (FARC-EP) was hospitalized after suffering a stroke. Doctors say he is well but will have to stay in hospital until Tuesday. Londono fell ill as UN observers stated that the FARC had completed its demobilization and disarmament process.

Medical doctors at the hospital in the central-Colombian city Villavicencio told reporters that Londono was well, in good spirit and even joking – however, they said, he would have to stay at the hospital for observation until Tuesday.

The 59-year-old Rodrigo Londono was elected as the FARC-EP’s leader in 2010 after the death of Alfonso Cano who was killed in a military raid. Londono’s stroke and hospitalization coincided with observers confirming that the FARC-EP had fulfilled its promise to demobilize and disarm. What remains now, for the guerrilla, the government, as well as the UN, to jointly clear over 300 remaining arms caches. The FARC will, after 52 years of civil war, be transformed into a legal, leftist political party.

Londono and other FARC leaders will also have to stand trial within Colombia’s transitional justice system that was established under the peace accord between the guerrilla and the FARC. He and the other six remaining FARC leaders will most likely be charged with about 118 crimes including homicides, forced disappearances, displacement, recruitment of child soldiers, and kidnappings – among others.

Dole Colombia_2017That said, Londono and comrades from the FARC leadership as well as about 7,000 former guerrilla will have to share the dock with ex-president Alvaro Uribe, some 24,000 State officials who have either been convicted of or charged with war crimes as well as about 12,500 civilians accused of financing terrorism.

Several corporations including Del Monte, Dole and Chiquita will also face serious charges, against others, for crimes against humanity. The Missing Persons Unit will be tasked with clarifying the fate of about 60,000 Colombians who have disappeared, have been disappeared. The unit will among others search for mass graves scattered across the country.
