Father and son fighting for life after lightning struck them in Lisburn, Northern Ireland; daughter seriously injured

Desperate school staff and parents rushed to treat the man and his two children, aged five and seven, who were stuck outside the school gates in the ‘freak’ accident

A father and son are fighting for life and his little girl has been seriously injured after they were hit by lightning at a school sports day.

The man, who is in a “critical condition” in intensive care, was picking up his boy, age five, and seven-year-old girl from Killowen Primary School in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, when the ‘freak’ accident happened.

His children were rushed to Royal Belfast Hospital for Children, with his son also in a “critical condition” in intensive care, and his daughter in a “serious condition”.

The man, who witnesses say was was on his mobile phone outside the school gates at the time of the strike, was taken to Lagan Valley Hospital in Lisburn for treatment.

Desperate school staff and parents rushed to treat the severely burnt family during the sports day event as they waited for three ambulance crews to arrive at the scene.

The vice principal of the school used a defibrillator on the critically-ill father after he was struck by the bolt en route to his jeep, the Belfast Telegraph reports.

A spokesperson for the Belfast Trust has confirmed the boy is in a critical condition and the young girl is seriously ill.

The Trust are advising anyone who believes they may have been struck by lightning during the recent storms to seek medical attention.

Fiona Douglas, principal of the school in Lisburn, said: “I can confirm that a parent and two children were injured outside the school’s main gate this afternoon.

“School staff and parents attended to the injured family until the arrival of the emergency services. Following this all other pupils, accompanied by staff, went safely to nearby Laurel Hill Community College where they were collected by parents.

“The thoughts of the entire school community are with the family at this time.”

SDLP councillor Pat Catney told the BBC: “It was just one of those freak tragic accidents that has stunned me and shocked me.”

“We have to think of the family.

“I’m thinking of the young father and the children who were injured as well.”

Parents of children at the school have taken to Facebook to wish the family well following the horror strike.

Lisa Elliot, whose children apparently attend the school, described the incident as “something you hear or see in a movie”.

She wrote: “Omg, what an experience. My thoughts go out to everyone at Killowen Primary School today.

“Unfortunately someone got hit by lighting. This is something you hear or see in a move, not at my boys school.”

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service have issued a warning following the incident in which three A&E crews and two paramedics attended the scene at around 2pm.

With more thundery showers forecast with the possibility of lightening, they’re asking people to “remain very vigilant when they are out and about”.

In a statement they said: “There is a high chance of thunder storms – lightning safety advice would suggest that you stay indoors but if you are outside you should avoid open fields and hilltops.

“You should also stay away from tall, isolated trees.

“If you are in a group, spread out to avoid the current travelling between group members.

“You should also stay away from water and wet items as well as metal objects, which are all excellent conductors of electricity.”

The shock incident comes after the recent sunny spell made way for severe storms which brought flooding and downpours to most of the UK.

Rain has battered parts of southern England leaving cars almost fully submerged under water.

It also hit Scotland, where mini tornadoes and flooding has wreaked havoc in some areas.

Images show drivers swimming to escape their cars after getting stuck in the conditions.

Torrential rain hit south London as emergency services were called to Croydon, Mitcham and Wallington to deal with the downpour.
