In this season of vehement political rhetoric, Political Blind Spot thought readers would enjoy the following refreshing feel good story.

March 1, a beautiful black Labrador puppy was abandoned in a busy shopping area in The Villages, a retirement community in Central Florida.  Imagine the confusion of the little fellow there amidst the noisy, lights and traffic.  However, before any harm could come to the dog some individuals spotted him on their way from dinner.  They coaxed the puppy to them with some leftover food from dinner and picked him up and carried him to a pet grooming shop; the shop called an animal rescue service that provided temporary shelter for the dog.

Susan Gros of the rescue service made this statement about someone who might abandon a dog: “You can’t really judge the person who dumps a dog.  You don’t know what they are facing.”  This is especially true in retirement dwellings such as the Villages: the owner of a pet may have become stricken with illness, or may have moved into an assisted-care facility, or may have possibly passed on.

Upon finding out about the homeless Labrador, The Villages-News, a publication serving this seniors community, ran a story about the incident.  Three days later, on March 3, the puppy was adopted and made part of a family in The Villages.  The adopting couple already had a rescued Australian Shepherd named Monte.  Jess, The Labrador, became a wonderful companion to Monte.  The new owners reported that the dogs have “become fast friends”.

According to The Villages-News, the husband and wife who made the Labrador part of their family spend half of the year in The Villages and the other half “at their acreage in New York”.   “The dogs soon will have the opportunity to run, play and swim in the lake,” the publication added.
