Sydney’s Rookwood General Cemetery is inviting the Jewish community on-site for an Open Day designed as an opportunity to learn a bit about Rookwood, from their 150+ year history to their operations.

Rookwood General Cemetery has held many open days for the Sydney community; however, this is the first designed specifically for the Jewish community.

“It was necessitated by COVID-19 capacity restrictions, but we think this could continue to be a wonderful way for communities to connect with Rookwood and get information relevant to their cultures and beliefs,” said Crystal Lindsay, Director of Marketing & Client Services.

“It is rare that people visit cemeteries without deep sadness, and this event seeks to give a safe space to consider death and dying, whilst providing some tools to assist attendees in starting healthy and insightful conversations around the process of memorialising a loved one.”

Rookwood General Cemetery assists many different communities to grieve and die in accordance with their values. Days like this open day help to shift the way we think about planning for end-of-life.

There will have a representative from the Sydney Chevra Kadisha and Rookwood’s Client Services team available to answer any questions over a Kosher morning tea on the day.

There will be practical resources available to take-home and attendees can make an appointment with a Client Services advisor to have more specific questions answered.

“You will not be pressured to buy a plot,” emphasised Ms Lindsay, “The day is about the Jewish community’s long and profound connection to Rookwood. We aim to share the history of Rookwood’s Jewish cemetery, whilst providing a safe space for members of the community to gain an understanding of Jewish funeral process so that they can make well-informed decisions.”

The event is being held at Rookwood General Cemetery on Tuesday 9 March from 10.00am – 11.30am. RSVP to [email protected] or 0499 910 221.
