A retired Egyptian major general and strategic expert, Adel Suleiman, has said that America recognises and is working on legalising the military coup, and that Morsi tried to build a strong Egypt based on the will of the Egyptian people.
Suleiman was commenting on a recent leaked recording of coup leader General Abdul-Fattah al-Sisi. In the recording, Al-Sisi said: “The problem with the American administration is a legal one.”
He continued to say: “Their legal description of what happened in Egypt is the source of their problem in continuing assistance in such circumstances. We have to be clear. They are eager to continue with assistance.”
Major General Suleiman said that Al-Sisi was mocking the American stance and that he accepted that the American administration recognises that what happened in Egypt is a coup.
Speaking to Al-Jazeera Mubasher Misr, Suleiman said that Egyptian governments, past and present, have been based on keeping the nation absent in order to maintain relations between the Egyptian army and the Americans.
He added that the army leadership cannot be independent from America because it receives American assistance in the form of weapons as Egypt is not self-dependent in this regard.
