France opposition seeks EU exit vote

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen has been urging President Francois Hollande to hold a referendum on the issue in January 2014.

Le Pen said she’d push for the vote unless the government makes some fundamental reforms.

She said abandoning the euro and a return to the national currency franc, as well as quitting the Schengen agreement are some of her conditions to withdraw from a call for referendum.

In an interview with BBC, she said “For several years we have seen the impact of the EU on our economy on the rise of unemployment and social problems.”

“I’ve demanded a renegotiation on a number of treaties including, of course, Schengen, in order to control immigration, but also a number of economic treaties which prevent France from protecting a certain number of its economic sectors.”

The French ruling Socialist Party and the far-right opposition have long been at odds over France’s membership in the EU.

Le Pen has earlier backed the British government’s proposal to hold an in-out referendum on EU membership in 2017.
