Gender gap ‘continues to widen’ in UK

A new report says that gender inequality is on the rise in the United Kingdom, with the gap between men and women widening in workplaces.

According to the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Gender Gap Report for 2014, the UK has slipped out of the world’s list for the top 20 nations for gender equality.

In the report, the UK previously ranked 18th and has currently dropped to 26th. The UK stands at its lowest since 2008 and is behind Scandinavian countries and the Philippines.

The WEF said that the noticeable drop in the country’s ratings could be due to its lower score in “economic participation,” which indicates ratios of women in the workplace, wage equality for similar work done by their male counterparts, and also the number of females in senior positions.

The report added that the UK ranks 48th in terms of both labor force participation and wage equality and 66th for estimated earned income.

The UK also ranks 94th in terms of its health and survival gap, and 32 for educational attainment.

Back in April, official figures released by the National Management Salary Survey showed that female workers in the UK were earning up to a third less than male workers.
