Gitmo lawyer objects to client condition

In a letter sent to the US Justice Department, Attorney Ramzi Kassem demanded the release of the photos of the injuries on the body of his Yemeni client, identified as Moath al-Alwi, inflicted on April 13.

Alwi was struck with rubber-coated steel bullets from a shotgun-like weapon in the chest as well as in the thigh, left elbow and shoulder, leaving his clothes “blood-soaked and torn,” according to Kassem’s letter.

The lawyer described the injuries as more serious than reported by the US military. He also called for a review of the incident.

“At such close range, it is well known that rubber-coated steel bullets can be lethal and should therefore never be employed,” Kassem stated.

Justice Department spokesman Dean Boyd said the US government is reviewing the letter.

On Friday, a group of activists wearing orange jumpsuits and black hoods, like those used on detainees at Guantanamo prison, gathered outside the White House to call for the immediate closure of the controversial jail.

About 130 prisoners have been on hunger strike at the Guantanamo Bay prison for 103 days in protest against their decade-plus imprisonment without charge or trial as well as the horrible conditions at the jail.

Upon taking office, US President Barack Obama promised to close down the Guantanamo prison by 2010. He has so far failed to deliver on the promise.
