Hamas, in another U-turn, realigns itself with Iran as primary sponsor

Christof Lehmann (nsnbc) : Yahya Sinwar, new Hamas leader and Hamas’ “Prime Minister” in Palestine’s Gaza Strip, said relations between Hamas and Iran have returned to normal and that Iran is once again the primary backer of Hamas and its armed wing, the Qassam Brigades. It is Hamas’ second U-turn since it left Syria and played a key role at carrying the Syrian war into Palestinian refugee camps.

hamas_fightersYahya Sinwar, who took office in February 2017, spoke to the press for the first time on Monday, August 28, 2017.  He stated that Iran, again, is “the largest backer financially and militarily” of the military wing of Hamas, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades. With Iran’s help, Sinwar said, Hamas will “[develop] our military strength in order to liberate Palestine.” “The Iranian military support to Hamas and al-Qassam is strategic,” Sinwar added, saying the once-flagging relationship had “become fantastic and returned to its former era.”

At the beginning of August, a Hamas delegation attended the inauguration of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who is entering his second term. Tehran and Hamas agreed to “turn a new page in bilateral relations.” Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in a statement that he was “ready to put aside all disagreements [with Hamas] for the sake of supporting Palestine and the Palestinian people as well as the unity of the Muslim world.”

Iran took Qatar’s traditional role as Hamas’ primary international backer in the early 2000s. In 2006 Iran provided an estimated 25% of Hamas’ military budget. However, relations between Iran and Hamas began to weaken when Qatar, in 2007, was one of the primary backers of war plans against Syria. In 2011 relations between Iran and Hamas soured when Hamas began to withdraw its representatives from Syria and turned against the Baath Party government led by President Bashar Al-Assad. Hamas’ formally closed its office in Syria in 2012. The last Hamas official to vacate the Damascus office was Imad al-Amadi.

On his return to Gaza, Imad al-Hamadi let himself be celebrated as a national hero. Not a word was abut Hamas realignment with Qatar. Not a word was said about the betrayal of the axis of resistance. The official reason Hamas gave for vacating the Damascus office was, that “the decision was based on the Syrian government’s crack-down against protesters”.

Several Hamas members who opposed the U-turn away from Damascus and Tehran ended up being liquidated, with assassinations being blamed on Israel and Mossad. One such mystery murder was the murder of  one of the deputies of former Hamas senior commander Mahmud al-Mabhuh, Kamal Hussein Ghannaja in is apartment in a Damascus suburb in June 2012.

It became even more evident that at least a leading and strong fraction of Hamas has chosen to side with Qatar’s war on Syria and the Western / Zionist plan for a Greater Israel, when Hamas official Dr. Abou Marzook, demanded that Hezbollah leave Syria. It is also inconceivable, that Dr. Abou Marzouk would have been making such a statement, even on Facebook, without him having the approval of and without the statement being concurrent with the Hamas leadership.

With Qatar under increased pressure fro fellow Gulf Cooperation Council members; With Turkey’s weakened role in Syria; With the Muslim Brotherhood project in Egypt under Morsi defeated; And with Iran / Hezbollah having reasserted their positions in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley and Syria’s Qalamoun region; After having carried the war into Palestinian refugee camps in Syria, especially into the now utterly devastated Yarmouk camp, it has now once again become “opportune” for Hamas to make yet another U-turn and to realign itself with Tehran.
