Hans Zatzka’s Academic Art and Flowery Fantasies

Hans Zatzka (1859 – 1945) was an Austrian Academic and fantasy painter, who also went by a number of other pseudonyms in order to be able to sell lots of paintings without avoid breaking contracts. He was born in Vienna, son of a carpenter and an actress. He was able to make a good living through painting frescoes for churches and other institutional buildings. However, it is his paintings of women, cherubim, fairies, and other fantastical scenes for which Hans is best known. In the 20th century many of his paintings were turned into postcards and prints, as his style of painting has often been favored in home decor. His originals still sell very well, and most of his massive collection of pieces are in private collections. 619 of his paintings were sold between 1997 and 2008. Obviously what is presented here is just a small fraction of his work.
