HAVE YOUR SAY: Dangerous dog legislation

STATE Parliament will today consider new legislation aimed at controlling dangerous dog breeds.

The move comes just two weeks after the tragic death of four year old Ayen Chol, who was mauled by a pit bull cross in her St Albans home.

Agriculture and Food Security Minister Peter Walsh said the Government would work with all parties in parliament to “ensure the swift passage of this legislation”.

The legislation effectively ends an amnesty on registering dangerous dog breeds and gives authorities more definitive visual clues on identifying restricted breeds.

“People should not be in fear of a dog attack when they are walking down a street or their children are playing in their back yards,” Mr Walsh said.

If the legislation was passed officers would be able to seize and destroy any dogs they identified as restricted if they were not registered with a council by September 29, Mr Walsh said.

The legislation would also add all pitbull crosses to the restricted breeds list.

Mr Walsh said the introduction today of a hotline also give Victorian residents a way to report dangerous breeds in their own street.

He said the hotline was not an emergency number and encouraged people to phone 000 in emergency situations.

The dangerous breeds hotline is on 1300 101 080 and is open from 8am-6pm.
