Since 1948 a nude statue of Hercules has stood in the Parc Mauresque in Arachon, France. The 10 ft. tall   statue is a symbol of the valiant struggle of the French Resistance against Nazi forces. Yves Foulon, mayor of the seaside town of 12,000 inhabitants, said, “I wouldn’t want anyone – not even my worst enemies – to go through what happens to this statute.” What happens to the statue is that vandals repeatedly break off his penis.

The statue was deprived of his penis so often that the local council decided it would be best to leave it off except for special events. This would also prevent future occurrences of such vandalism and save the townspeople from further pain or embarrassment.  The town leaders have decided to fit the statue of Hercules with a removable penis that will be attached only for special occasions in the park and removed immediately after the event ends.

The solution was the idea of Deputy Mayor Martine Phelippot, a doctor. She was inspired by her medical background and thought that a removable penis was the only way to avoid constantly chasing after Hercules’ anatomy.

Hercules has had problems with his penis since his creation. Sculptor Claude Bouscau was twice forced to shorten the length of the penis to avoid complaints by influential ladies of the time that Hercules was over-endowed. Numerous unsolved cases of thefts of the statue’s penis have been reported through the years.

When the penis is removed a thin metal rod will be inserted in place of the male organ. No information has been given about the design or dimensions of the detachable penis.
