A sea of fans gathered to honor the life of Greek-American rapper Mad Clip, or Peter Anastasopoulos, at his funeral in Greece on Monday.
Mad Clip tragically died in a car crash in the southern Athenian suburb of Vouliagmeni on Thursday.
The 34-year-old rapper lost control of the vehicle he was driving and crashed into a tree and an electrical pole. The collision was so severe that the driver was trapped inside the vehicle and it took about two hours for the firefighters to release him.
Fans mourn Mad Clip at funeral in Greece
Family and friends, along with devoted fans, mourned the loss of the rapper at his funeral on Monday afternoon at the Panagitsa Church in Palaio Faliro, a seaside southern suburb of Athens.
Scores of Mad Clip’s admirers, all wearing black, expressed their sorrow at the loss of the rapper, whose songs were extremely popular in Greece.
After the funeral, Anastasopoulos’s remains were transferred to the cemetery in Palaio Faliro, where he was buried.
As his body was taken to the cemetery, fans of the rapper stood waiting outside of the church to say their final goodbyes. Many shouted in despair or sent messages to their favorite rapper, who tragically passed away.
Raised in Astoria, Moved to Greece
Anastasopoulos, a.k.a Mad Clip, was born in Astoria, New York in 1988 and came to Greece for the first time at the age of 13. Until 2016, when he finally settled in Greece, he had lived in the US, the UK and Cyprus.
“Since coming to Greece as a child, I’ve been coming and going. But since 2016, I have lived here continuously. I dropped anchor,” he said in a recent interview.
“In 2016 I started writing music in Greek, after years writing songs in English. I had a dream to succeed abroad, but this never happened,” Mad Clip said.
“I settled in Greece at the right time, as a Greek rapper urged me to translate my songs in Greek. I did so, and everything followed. At the end of the day you follow the way of life that you express in your songs. I like to have a good time, I like to see people having fun, I want to give my own vibe,” Mad Clip added.
He made a splash in the Greek music scene by releasing four albums: “Super trapper”, “O Amerikanos” LP, “Super Trapper 2” and “Still Active.”
His songs, such as “Maybe” with Eleni Foureira, “Yachts”, “Hustla”, “Baby” and “Hope” became instant hits. Several exceeded 20 million views on YouTube.
Rapper Taki Chan helped him release his first single, “Eimai Trelos” at the age of 27. Mad Clip then signed a contract with the record company Capital Music. He has also collaborated with artists such as Light, Snik, Toquel, FY and Sin Boy.
In a separate interview he said that people in Astoria warmly welcomed him when he returned for a concert in 2019. “I was treated like a superstar who returned from Greece for the concert…I was seen as the successful kid who came from the homeland to honor them with his presence.”
