Iraqi officials have discovered the remains of over 470 victims of what is believed to be a mass execution carried out by Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) near Tikrit.

ISIL claimed it killed 1,700 Iraqi soldiers during the June 2014 massacre.

ISIL claimed it killed 1,700 Iraqi soldiers during the June 2014 massacre.

Ministry of Health officials announced on May 28 the bodies were found at four burial sites.

“We have exhumed the bodies of 470 Speicher martyrs from burial sites in Tikrit, Ministry of Health official Adila Hammoud said, referring to the nearby military base that the massacre was named after, according to AFP.

The Speicher military base, on the outskirts of Tikrit, came under attack by ISIL in June 2014. Reports say the jihadists either executed or abducted hundreds of mostly Shi’ite male recruits.

The Tikrit death toll, one of the worst atrocities committed by ISIL, may be as high as 1,700, officials say as mass executions are said to have taken place throughout the city.

“These bodies come from four burial sites… One of them was bigger than the others and contained 400,â€ said Ziad Ali Abbas, the chief doctor at Baghdad’s main morgue, AFP reported.

The Red Cross is joining local authorities in conducting forensic examinations to identify the remains. Hundreds of families whose fathers, brothers and sons went missing are awaiting the results. Iraqi officials said on May 28 that the first list of names would be released next week.
