Hungary students protest education cuts

Protesters gathered on Monday near Human Resources Ministry where they shouted anti-government slogans.

The government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced sweeping reforms in public education sector, including sharp cuts in higher education, earlier this month. Since then, thousands of Hungarian students and teachers have demonstrated in different cities in the country to voice protest at the reforms.

“Viktor Orban and his men have panicked, we can say they really have panicked. Now suddenly they want to launch a big reform…it’s impossible,” said a student during the Monday rally.

In a bid to calm angry students, Hungary’s prime minister decided to amend his reform proposal on Saturday, saying that “I have understood that university and college education must remain free of charge for the students, without any kind of indebtedness, but students should meet the necessary…entry requirements which will be announced on December 19.”

Reports say that students and teachers in Hungary have planned to stage mass rallies against the government and new education reforms on Wednesday.
