Iran, Azerbaijan discuss expansion of railway cooperation

Baku, April 7, IRNA – Azeri Economy Minister Shahin Mostafaev and Managing Director of Iran’s Railway Company Mohsen Pour-Seyyed Aqaei in a meeting on Thursday discussed ways for the expansion of mutual cooperation.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed the measures taken in the field of linking the two countries’ railway systems within the framework of completion of North-South Transport Corridor.

Mostafaev described the political will of the Azeri and Iranian presidents and the exchange of visits by the two countries’ officials aimed at expansion of ties as important, and said, “The relations of the two neighboring countries in different areas, including transportation, is successfully expanding.”

The Azeri economy minister said that linking the two countries’ railway systems creates new opportunities for the expansion of cooperation and increasing the transit capacities.

He said that according to an agreement signed during recent visit of Azeri President Elham Aliyev to Iran, the preliminary works for starting the construction of railway bridge on Astara river along Iran-Azerbaijan joint border underway.

Iran’s Railway Company managing director also underlined the importance of connecting the two countries’ railways in the expansion of economic cooperation between the two countries.
