Iran blames supporters of terrorist groups for fragile ceasefire in Syria

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian censured certain countries for troubling establishment of sustainable truce in Syria by supporting the terrorists.

“As long as some overt and covert supports for the terrorists’ moves are not stopped, no durable peace will prevail in Syria,” Amir Abdollahian said in an interview with the state-run TV on Tuesday night.

He also said that establishment of long-term truce in Syria also depends on its neighbors’ blocking of bordering areas to prevent the terrorists’ trafficking.

Asked about the results of Tuesday Vienna talks on ceasefire in Syria, also attended by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Amir Abdollahian said there is still gaps and differences between those countries which favor resorting to military means by supporting the terrorists and those states which believe in political methods to settle the crisis.

He added that during the meeting, the Iranian top diplomat criticized the process of sending humanitarian aid to certain regions in Syria, including the two towns of Foua’a and Kafraya in Idlib province, and participation of notorious terrorist leaders in Vienna talks instead of real representatives of dissident groups and Syrian people, calling it as contradictory to the political solution.

Upon arrival in Vienna on Monday night, Zarif reiterated his country’s opposition to the military solution of the Syrian problem, and said blocking the terrorists’ use of truce to recruit more forces should be the result of the International Syria Support Group meeting in Vienna.

“Despite attempts by the terrorist groups and their regional and global supporters, the crisis in Syria has no military solution and the International Syria Support Group meeting is an opportunity to emphasize the necessity for complete respect for the ceasefire,” Zarif told reporters.

He warned of the danger posed by terrorism to Syria, the region and the entire world, and said, “Confrontation against these terrorist groups is necessary and we shouldn’t allow them to use the truce to intensify the terrorist acts against the Syrian people.”

Zarif described the Vienna talks as a good opportunity, and said Iran has always underscored the need to settle the crisis in Syria through political talks.
