Iran charges Christians with crimes against government

Five Iranian Christian converts will stand trial for their faith, following their arrest in October when security forces raided an underground church in the city of Shiraz during a prayer session. The trial is set to begin this week in Iran’s Revolutionary Court in Fars Province, according to Christian Solidarity Worldwide, a religious persecution watchdog group.

The imprisoned men, Mohammad Roghangir, Shahin Lahooti, Surush Saraie, Eskandar Rezaie, and Massoud Rezaie are members of the Church of Iran denomination, one of the country’s largest house church movements.

Charges against the five men involve disturbing public order, evangelizing, threatening national security, and an internet activity against the government.

Iranian media stronghold Mohabat News has reported that an additional four Iranian Christians are currently on trial for participating in house church services, evangelizing and promoting Christianity, having contact with foreign Christian ministries, distributing propaganda against the regime, and disturbing national security.

“Judging from recent cases, it is likely that, at the very least, those detained may face lengthy prison sentences,” said CSW spokesperson Kiri Kankhwende.

The organization’s president, Andrew Johnston, has called on Iran to respect freedom of religion and belief.

“Once again Iranian Christians face charges couched in political terms that in reality stem from their choice of faith and desire to exercise the right to worship in community with others, as guaranteed in article 18 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), to which Iran is party,” he said.

Throughout Iran, the underground church network has been rapidly growing a place where converts from Islam to Christianity – long inviting aprisals from the government – can pray as they are generally forbidden to attend formal church services.

As the international community’s attention is on Iran’s nuclear ambition, human rights violations, especially against non-Muslims in Iran, has increased significantly.
