Iran deputy FM in Moscow for talks

The Iranian diplomat, who arrived in Moscow on Monday, is scheduled to discuss the latest situation in the Middle East and North Africa with senior Russian authorities.

The visit is taking place in line with a decision by Tehran and Moscow to hold constant consultations over regional issues.

Iran and Russia have repeatedly expressed their support for the reforms pledged and implemented by Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad’s government and the legitimate demands of the Syrian people.

Both countries have also been in unison against foreign interference in Syria’s internal affairs.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011, with demonstrations being held both against and in favor of President Assad. Hundreds of people, including security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.

While the West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of the killings, Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, stating that it is being orchestrated from abroad.

President Assad said on February 20 that “some foreign countries” are fueling the year-long turmoil in Syria by supporting and funding “armed terrorist groups fighting against the government.”

Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey have voiced support for the rebels in Syria.
