Iran, Japan to implement prisoners swap MoU

Japan’s Foreign Ministry said in a press statement on Tuesday that the two countries exchanged a diplomatic note on July 3 on the implementation of the agreement to transfer prisoners between Iran and Japan signed in January 2015.

The agreement will be beginning August 2, 2016, the Ministry said.

The agreement specifies procedures and formalities for the transfer of prisoners who have been convicted by the courts of the two countries under the determined conditions.

The sign of the agreement between the two countries provides an opportunity for citizens sentenced in Japan and Iran to spend the remainder of their convictions in their home countries.

The agreement will help facilitate the improvement, rehabilitation and social reintegration of convicts and develop bilateral cooperation in criminal and penal fields.
