nsnbc : The Saidsadiq football club from Iraq’s Kurdistan Autonomous Region has claimed that security forces in Iran have cancelled a friendly match between it and another club in the Kurdish city of Bukan, northwestern Iran.
The match between the Iraqi Kurdistan Region’s Saidsadiq Club and the Iranian Bukan Club was scheduled for Friday. The Iranian club announced on its official Instagram Thursday that the match had been cancelled. It provided no explanation saying details will be released at a later date.
The Saidsadiq Club, whose footballers are in Iran on an official invitation, said in a statement that the team had been training in Bukan for three days in preparation for the match.
About 13,000 fans were expected to attend the match, many of whom “support Saidsadiq Club and its players,” the club said. “But the security committee in the area postponed the match to an unknown date with the justification that they are unable to control the stadium and protect the lives of the players,” the club stated.
Yadgar Mohammed, head of the Saidsadiq Club, told reporters on Friday that they are working with security officials in Bukan in order to reschedule the match, with the possibility of playing in the absence of fans. Both clubs play in league two in their respective countries.
Some fans have expressed their anger over the cancelled match. Commenters on Bukan’s Instagram called it “playing with the feelings of the fans” and “offensive” to turn away a club that was invited to the city. Bukan is located in the mainly Kurdish province of West Azerbaijan, part of Iranian Kurdistan.
