NICOSIA — Iran’s elite military has been hit hard by Kurdish insurgents from Iraq.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has been struck by an attack from insurgents linked to the Kurdish Workers Party.

web_kurdistan-mapIRGC said five officers were killed in the Kurdish operation on Oct. 10 near the Iraqi border.

“The force was attacked by counter-revolutionary armed guerrillas,” an IRGC officer said.

Iran’s state-owned Fars News Agency said two IRGC officers were also injured in the Kurdish operation, which took place near Baneh, some 500 kilometers east of Teheran. Fars did not cite those believed responsible for the attack.

The Kurdish attack on IRGC was said to have been the bloodiest since April 2012. At the time, units linked to the PKK’s Iranian wing, called Party of Free Life of Kurdistan, killed four IRGC officers near the Iraqi border.

The Kurds have reported an IRGC buildup near the Iraqi border. In September, Kurdish sources warned that PJAK would not tolerate the Iranian military presence.
