nsnbc : Iraq’s prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and other leading Iraqi officials are puzzled by the agreement reached between Hezbollah, the Syrian military and Islamic State units in the Lebanon – Syria border region to evacuate to Syria’s Deir Ez-Zor province near the Iraqi border.

Iraq border_archivesIraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi noted that he was surprised at the agreement between Hezbollah and ISIS, facilitated by the Syrian government and the Syrian Red Cross, to evacuate ISIS fighters from the Qalamoun region in Damascus province to Syria’s eastern Deir Ez-Zor province. Al-Abadi called on the Syrian government to review how the deal between Hezbollah and ISIS came about.

The evacuation began on Sunday and effectively had the last ISIS fighters and family members from the Syria – Lebanon border removed to Deir Ez-Zor where ISIS is expected to make a last stand in an attempt to maintain at least some contiguous territory.

Al-Abadi wasn’t the only one who was puzzled by the deal. Iraqi Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jubouri said Wednesday “Iraq should not pay the price for agreements that affect its security and sovereignty” He described the deal as “A return to square one and a misrecognition of the martyrs’ bloods.”

Mohamed al-Karbouli, head of the parliament’s defense and security committee, said some of the ISIS fighters evacuated as part of the deal had entered the group’s havens in Iraq’s Anbar province, bordering Syria. Al-Karabouli cited eyewitness reports from the town of Rawa where locals had observed some of the ISIS fighters. “The area between Syria’s Boukamal and Sakra, south of Hit, Anbar, is open and out of control,” he told reporters.

Karbouli said reaching the deal was “a grave mistake”. Karbala province council also made a statement deeming the measure “unjustified and dangerous”, and said it represented a threat to the security of Iraq, especially the holy city which has borders with Syria.
