Iraqi Kurdistan’s KDP and Gorran meet to discuss unified front

KDP spokesperson Mahmood Mohammed told reporters “In the meeting we will talk on two topics, one is normalizing the relations between all the political parties and casting aside problems. … The second topic is the Erbil-Baghdad stalemate and unanimity of the political parties on that ground.”

It is believed the KDP delegation will also meet with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) later in the day. The Gorran (Change Movement) has called for the dissolution of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the establishment of a national interim salvation government to engage in dialogue with Baghdad and prepare for elections. The party said the KRG has lost legitimacy after Iraq took over the disputed areas.

“All of the authority and governing institutions should be dissolved,” urged Gorran, blaming the ruling KDP and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) of failing to administer the Region. The call was rejected by the KDP and the PUK.

KDP and Gorran last met in Sulaimani after the funeral of PUK leader Jalal Talabani where they reportedly had “frank discussions” in what was hoped to be the first step towards mending relations between the two parties.

Disagreements between the two led to the shutting down of parliament two years ago. Parliament was reactivated in the summer of 2017 in order to approve holding the September 25 independence referendum. Gorran boycotted initial sessions but returned when Masoud Barzani resigned as president and the parliament discussed the presidential powers.
