Israel approves 2,500 new settlement units

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman approved on Tuesday 2,500 new settlement units in occupied West Bank.

“Me and my defence minister have approved new settlement units,” Netanyahu wrote on twitter, following the approval.

Most of the new settlement units will be built in the large settlements of Ariel and in Givat Ze’ev, in the occupied West Bank.

But some will also go up in settlements outside the larger blocs, due to prior agreements between the Israeli government and settlement councils, as well as court decisions.

The decision came just two days after the Israeli Jewish municipality approved the construction of 566 new settlement units in East Jerusalem.

Notably, the approvals came on the heels of a phone conversation between Netanyahu and the US President Donald Trump, in which the two discussed their plans regarding pushing Israeli Jewish settlement in Palestinian territories forward.

Repeated approval of new Israeli Jewish settlement units is considered a form of challenge for the latest UN Security Council resolution 2,334, which delegitimised settlement.
