Israel approves hundreds of new settlement units

Israeli occupation authorities approved on Wednesday construction of hundreds of new settlement units in occupied West bank, retroactively legalised others.

The Israeli Civil Administration’s High Planning Committee approved the building of 234 settlement units in the illegal settlement of Elkana, 31 units in Beit Arye and 20 units in Givat Ze’ev.

Meanwhile, the committee has also legalised 178 settlement units which were built in the illegal settlement of Beit Arye the 1980s.

Earlier this month, a Jerusalem district panel approved the construction of 56 settlement units in the Jerusalem illegal settlement of Ramot, located across the Green Line.

Last week, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that Israel plans to expand the illegal Jewish settlement in the West Bank city of Al-Khalil for the first time in over a decade.

The US State Department expressed “deep concern” about the intention to advance construction for settlers in the occupied territories as it is opposed to the international law.

“We strongly oppose all settlement activity, which is corrosive to the cause of peace. And we have said repeatedly such moves are not consistent with Israel’s stated desire to achieve a two-state solution,” a State Department spokesman said.
