Israel boasts about Iron Dome

Israeli Minister for Military Affairs Ehud Barak made the remarks during a speech at the opening of the annual conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in Washington on Sunday.

AIPAC is the one of the most powerful lobbies in the United States. It works to influence US foreign and domestic policy for the interest of Israel.

Israel used its Iron Dome missile batteries in its latest war against Palestinians last year.

In November 2012, an eight-day Israeli offensive in Gaza killed about 170 Palestinians, including many women and children, and injured over 1,400 others.

In his speech, Barak also thanked US President Barack Obama and former American Defense Secretary Leon Panetta for their “resolute backing of Israel.”

At the AIPAC, Israeli lobbyists are seeking to push Washington to provide Tel Aviv with 3.1 billion dollars of US taxpayers’ money in annual military aid for both 2013 and 2014.

On July 27, 2012, Obama signed the United States-Israel Enhanced Security Cooperation Act of 2012, a piece of legislation ratified by Congress that approved 70 million dollars in military assistance to Israel.

According to a White House fact sheet, Obama said that “despite tough fiscal times” he “fought for and secured full funding for Israel” in fiscal year 2012, including $3 billion in Foreign Military Financing.
