Israel police nab rabbi in raid

Police said officers raided the rabbi’s home and office on Thursday and took him into custody for interrogation at the fraud unit headquarters in Lod, south of Tel Aviv, AFP reported.

They added that the investigation is ongoing.

Thursday’s probe of Metzger followed a months-long covert investigation into his financial dealings, according to the police.

The officers confiscated computers and documents and arrested three of Metzger’s associates during the raid.

Metzger was voted into the prestigious position in 2003 due to the support of the senior ultraorthodox rabbinic authority at the time.

Metzger had already been subject to questioning in 2005 on suspicion of receiving benefits from a hotel in al-Quds (Jerusalem).

In 2006, the then-attorney general Menachem Mazuz, however, decided against indicting him.

Metzger’s 10-year term will end this year.
