Israel releases top Palestinian official

Dweik, who was arrested at Jaba checkpoint north of al-Quds (Jerusalem), was held in administrative detention without charge or trial.

Immediately after his release, he issued a statement and encouraged resilience and unity between the Palestinians.

“The message of prisoners is clear and that is unity. We hope that everyone will stand next to the prisoners and all gather as one hand,” the PLC head said.

Dweik also referred to the importance of Islamic Awakening that caused revolutions in the Middle East and North Africa. He emphasized that Palestinians should do the same.

There are currently over 4,000 Palestinians being held by Israel while 285 of them are in administrative detention.

The administrative detention, often implemented by the Israeli regime against the Palestinian population, is a sort of imprisonment without trial or charge, allowing regime forces to make detentions without formal charges for up to six months. However, the detention order can be renewed for indefinite periods of time.
