Israeli gov’t approves $13m for illegal settlements

Days of Palestine, Jerusalem -Israeli occupation government approved on Sunday some NIS50m ($12.9m) in support for illegal Jewish settlement in West Bank city of Al-Khalil.

The decision by the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s far-right cabinet is aimed at “strengthening” the Jewish-only settlements.

“All Israeli ministries were recruited to support the settlers of the [illegal] settlement of Kiryat Arba and the those living in the Old City of Hebron (Al-Khalil),” Netanyahu said.

Kiryat Arba is a large settlement near Al-Khalil, the largest Palestinian West Bank city, where hundreds of Jewish settlers live in stolen houses.

The illegal settlers live in the heart of a Palestinian area and are protected by thousands of Israeli soldiers, while local Palestinians endure restricted movement due to the military checkpoints in and around Al-Khalil’s historic Old City.

Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are considered illegal under international law and have been major stumbling blocks in negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis.

Between 2009 and 2014, Israeli settlements expanded by 23 per cent in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

More than 700,000 Jewish settlers already live in more than 150 Jewish-only settlements across the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, according to the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem.

The United States, the European Union and many others in the international community have called for a halt to settlement building, but Israel does not care about this and the international community does not take any measures to deter it.

“We are familiar with the American position; we do not accept it. Building in Jerusalem and Maale Adumim is not, with all due respect, distancing peace,” Netanyahu said on Wednesday at a press conference in Rwanda, referring to an illegal settlement near Jerusalem.
