Israeli soldiers shoot Palestinian man

Israeli forces have shot and injured a Palestinian man in the central Gaza Strip, Press TV reports.

Palestinian paramedics said the man was shot in the chest in the city of Deir al-Balah, located about 14 kilometers (8.5 miles) south of Gaza City, on Sunday.

The shooting comes just two days after Israeli troops shot dead a man and wounded another in the northern Gaza Strip city of Beit Lahia.

The incident occurred when a group of young men were present near the so-called buffer zone, close to the Jabalia refugee camp.

A 20-year-old was shot in the chest and died upon arrival at the hospital. Another Palestinian youth was also shot in the leg.

On January 22, an Israeli fighter jet targeted a vehicle in the northeastern Gaza Strip city of Beit Hanoun, killing two members of the Palestinian movement of Islamic Jihad.

Gaza has been blockaded since June 2007, a situation that has caused a decline in the standards of living, unprecedented levels of unemployment, and unrelenting poverty.

Israel denies about 1.7 million people in Gaza their basic rights, such as freedom of movement, jobs that pay proper wages, and adequate healthcare and education.

In 2011, a UN panel found that Israel’s blockade has subjected Gazans to collective punishment, which is “in flagrant contravention of international human rights and humanitarian law.”

Israel has ignored repeated international pleas to lift the blockade.
