Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has started serving a prison sentence of nineteen months for bribery and obstruction of justice.
Olmert was convicted in March 2014 in a case that accused him of accepting bribes to promote a controversial real estate project in Jerusalem. The charges pertained to a period when he was mayor of Jerusalem and trade minister, years before he became prime minister in 2006.
In 2010, Olmert was named as the key suspect in the so-called Holyland affair on suspicion that he received bribes totaling some $430,000. He was forced to resign in early 2009 amid the allegations. His departure cleared the way for Benjamin Netanyahu’s election.
