Italy treating migrants ‘like animals’

A refugee in Italy says those immigrants to the European country who have not gone through conventional immigration procedures are treated like “animals.”

The unnamed refugee, who is of a Syrian origin, recently filmed a video on a mobile phone showing the degrading treatment of migrants at a center on the island of Lampedusa.

The footage was broadcasted by Italy’s Rai 2 television channel on Monday. It shows migrants being lined up in an open-air and crowded country yard and forced to take off all clothing in mixed company to be hosed down in cold weather.

The Syrian man said that the move was apparently a practice to combat a skin condition known as scabies and that it takes place every few days.

People from Africa and the Middle East who took dangerous boat trips to Italy to seek refuge are currently staying in the camp.

There has been a surge the flow of migrants trying to reach European countries following the unrest in Egypt, Syria and other Arab and African countries.

Giusi Nicolini, the mayor of Lampedusa, said that the footage made the center look like a “concentration camp” and that Italy should be “ashamed” of its treatment of migrants.

Laura Boldrini, the president of Italy’s lower house of parliament, said that “stripping men and women naked outside in the middle of winter” was “unworthy of a civilized country.”

Laurens Jolles, an official with the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR said in a statement on Tuesday that the body has “for years asked Italian authorities to swiftly transfer people out of Lampedusa.”

“The constant overcrowding that occurs is unsustainable and leads to a situation where, despite the efforts of humanitarian workers, the assistance offered is far below the minimum standards,” he added.
