Kashmir observes complete shutdown

A complete shutdown has been observed in Indian- administered Kashmir as people protest the killing of killing a local youth by government forces, Press TV reports.

The call for shutdown was given after Indian forces killed 20-year old Irshad Ahmed Shah and injured three other civilians as they opened fire on protesters in the town of Sopore near Kashmir’s main city of Srinagar on Monday.

All shops, business establishments, schools, colleges and government offices have been closed and public transport is not running.

The demonstrators were protesting the killing of a pro-independence fighter in the mountainous Himalayan region.

The latest act of violence has sparked condemnation and anger across the region as people demand prosecution of those guilty.

“A number of innocent killings have taken place in the past, inquiries have been ordered in a number of cases, but no action has been taken against anyone, our youths are being unnecessarily harassed by security forces and consequently they are forced to take up arms,” opposition leader Mehbooba Mufti told the Press TV correspondent.

Curfew was imposed in the area to contain the situation and authorities have ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Kashmir lies at the heart of more than 66 years of hostility between India and Pakistan. Both neighbors claim the region in full but have partial control over it.

The neighbors agreed on a ceasefire in 2003 and launched a peace process the following year. Since then, there have been sporadic clashes, with both sides accusing the other of violating the ceasefire.

Thousands of people have been killed in Kashmir over the past 20 years.
