Late on Wednesday Dr. Amanj Raheem, secretary of the Kurdistan Region’s Council of Ministers, told reporters “Tomorrow we will clarify in an announcement that the Iraqi government and parliament’s decisions are illegal and unconstitutional.” Raheem added that Baghdad had overstepped its authorities and harmed good relations between Baghdad and Erbil with its resolutions against the Kurdistan region.

Responding to his own Cabinet as well to the federal parliament in Baghdad, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi announced several measures against Kurdistan, including the deployment of Iraqi troops to disputed areas, ordering airports in the Kurdistan Autonomous Region shuttered, and demanding that foreign nations withdraw their missions from the region.

Raheem stressed that the Iraqi parliament’s rulings cannot be implemented in Erbil unless “the Kurdistan parliament approves them.” The Kurdistan Region, despite mounting pressures from the Iraqi government, neighboring and world countries, stood firm and its independence referendum on Monday. KAR President Masoud Barzani has since declared victory for the “Yes – for independence” campaign but the detailed results, including detailed results for disputed areas and cities like Kirkuk haven’t yet been published.

Omed Khoshnaw, head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) faction reportedly told the Rudaw news agency that the Kurdistan parliament’s factions are also going to meet on Friday to set a date for a parliament session to discuss Baghdad’s interventions and rulings and to discuss a response to Baghdad.
