Hariri made his announcement at the end of the first Cabinet meeting to be held since Lebanon was thrown into a political crisis following Hariri’s November 4 resignation and his subsequent “suspension” of his resignation.

Hariri surprised Lebanon and the region with what was widely described as “a bizarre resignation” in a televised broadcast from Saudi Arabia last month, citing Hezbollah’s meddling in regional affairs as a main reason for stepping down.

Questions were raised whether Hariri was being held by Riyadh against his will and whether he was under duress. After he reappeared, Hariri went to France where he met French President Macron, before he went on to Egypt and Lebanon.

A source from within the inner circle around Saad Hariri contacted nsnbc international editor-in-chief Christof Lehmann in 2014, presenting evidence that Hariri was one of the co-architects of the invasion of Iraq with the help of the so-called Islamic State.

In a conversation with Lehmann on in November,, the same source said he could not be sure, but “Hariri may have run into problems with Riyadh and with Washington over his concerns that the Middle East war against Syria and Iraq results in a new civil war in Lebanon”.

It is worth recalling that the Chairman of the Lebanese Arab Democratic Party, Rifaat Eid, on October 14, 2014, warned that Saudi Arabia was planning to burn Lebanon in retaliation if Hezbollah intervened in the battle for the Qalamoun region. Lebanon’s Arab Democratic Party maintains close ties to the Syrian Arab Baath Party. During a news conference, Rifaat Eid said:

Saudi Arabia is running the battle in Qalamoun and we have information that it (Saudi Arabia) has warned Hezbollah against participating in the battle (because) it will cost (Hezbollah) a lot in the Bekaa and even in the North of Lebanon”.

Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting, attended by Hariri, endorsed a statement that calls on rival Lebanese groups to distance themselves from regional conflicts and the internal affairs of Arab countries. Hariri heads a coalition government that includes ministers from the Lebanese Hezbollah (Party of God). Hezbollah’s armed wing is fighting in Syria alongside Syrian government forces and other Iranian-backed groups.
