Liberation of Syria’s Deir Ez-Zor means better humanitarian access: De Mistura

nsnbc : The breaking of the siege on Syria’s city of Deir Ez-Zor and the linking up of Syrian Arab Amy (SAA) forces that have defended the besieged city from ISIS and SAA forces who now can reach the city by road, means that there soon will be better, much-needed humanitarian access.

Deir Ez-Zor_SAA_Syria_Sep 2017_1Staffan de Mistura, the United nation’s special envoy for Syria, told reporters that he and the UN welcomes that Deir Ez-Zor now is almost liberated. He added “And as soon as the road access will be clarified and cleared, I think that the people of Deir ez-Zor will be able to be reached via road, which means in a much cheaper and effective way.”

However, de Mistura’s optimism with regard to deliveries of humanitarian aid by road was cautions. The SAA is now controlling areas along the main road to Deir Ez-Zor and ground forces are supported by the Syrian and Russian air forces. Convoys will, however, remain vulnerable targets and became – arguably – even more vulnerable now that ISIS will increasingly have to rely on guerrilla tactics.

“The convoy which have been waiting for going to Kefraya and Foua, has once again been prepared and I hope, this would be working,” Mistura said.  “We are talking about 7,000 people and 2,000 people respectively. This had been postponed several times.” Syria’s State news agency SANA reported a convoy carrying food, medical supplies and educational materials arrived in Deir ez-Zor city on Thursday. It did not specify whether it contained UN aid.

SAA_Deir Ez-Zor_Sep 2017_2_SyriaPhotos on social media on Wednesday showed jubilant fighters said to be aligned with the Syrian government celebrating. The fighting had been near the military base of the 137th Brigade on the outskirts of Deir ez-Zor. Syrian military sources reported that  “the Air Force has directed intensive strikes on the hideouts and fortified points of ISIS in the areas of al-Malha, al-Thardah and near al-Taim oil field and the villages of Shula and Ayyash and Bugheiliyeh, which resulted in the destruction of some of the targets and the elimination of many terrorists.”

The SAA also released video of what it said were pro-regime elements launching artillery in the area of Deir ez-Zor on Thursday. It showed tanks, rocket launchers, and soldiers firing multiple times. A road sign in Arabic reads “Deir ez-Zor welcomes you.”
