State Disaster Management Minister Renu Kumari Kushwaha said on Monday, “About 24 people including seven children were killed Saturday and Sunday by bolts of lightning across Bihar.”
Eight people including two children were also killed by the lightning in Jharkhand, which neighbors Bihar, said Puran Mahto, an official in the state’s Dhanbad District.
Heavy torrential rains caused damage to houses and trees across the region on Sunday night. The rainfall accompanied by strong winds also cut power in some parts of the region.
Lightning strikes are common during the June-October monsoon season and villagers housed in bamboo-and-grass huts are generally most at risk.
