Limmud Oz, Sydney’s Jewish festival of ideas and culture, is back next month.
Limmud Oz 2021 is an immersive, two-day event featuring all aspects of Jewish learning, in which everyone can be a student, and anyone can be a teacher. No matter what corner of the Jewish community you are from, no matter your age or Jewish practice or background, Limmud Oz will have something for everyone.
Limmud Oz is not affiliated with any strand of Judaism and is inclusive, welcoming, and open to all ideas. Sessions are run on a huge range of topics by educators, artists, performers, experts, and amateur enthusiasts from all over our local and international Jewish community.
This year, Limmud Oz will be held on Sunday 13 June at Moriah College, and Monday 14 June at the Roundhouse, UNSW. The theme of Limmud Oz 2021 is community, and it represents a chance for people from all over our diverse Jewish community to come together, consider new ideas, laugh, learn, engage in conversation, meet new and interesting people, and even dance.
After last year’s online festival during the lockdown, Limmud Oz 2021 will be a hybrid event, showcasing a fabulous mix of Australian performers and speakers, and live-streamed international guests. Musical entertainment will be provided by the wonderful klezmer band CHUTNEY, who have performed at two previous Limmud Oz festivals.
This year, our international speakers are as varied and rich in experience as our own Jewish community. They include:
Rabbi Benny Lau, author, inclusion activist, and founder of 929, an initiative to help Jews of all backgrounds rediscover the riches of the Tanach.
Dr Bat Sheva Marcus, dubbed the ‘Orthodox Sex Guru’ by the New York Times; a sex therapist, author, podcaster and director of the largest women’s sexual health centre in the US.
Amy Jill Levine, author and self-described Yankee Jewish feminist, who teaches divinity in a Protestant school in the heart of the US Bible Belt.
Yosef Abramowitz, aka ‘Captain Sunshine’, activist, educator, CEO, Nobel Peace Prize nominee for 2021, and one of the pioneers of solar energy in Israel and East Africa.
Yael Kanarek, an Israeli-American multidisciplinary artist whose work includes ‘Toratah’, an ongoing project to rewrite the entire Torah with the genders of each character swapped.
David Jablinowitz, the voice of English news at Kol Yisrael (Israel Radio) for thirty years, who has interviewed seven Israeli Prime Ministers, briefed delegates to Israel, and chatted baseball with Barack Obama.
Nicole Maor, an Israeli lawyer who assists new Israeli immigrants to obtain legal status, and has argued cases in Israel’s Supreme Court for the recognition of non-Orthodox converts under the Law of Return.
Janna Gur, a Latvian-Israeli food writer and Jewish cuisine expert, who links food with history, religion, art, politics, and even gossip.
