nsnbc : Luciano Marin a.k.a. Ivan Marquez has assumed the leadership of Colombia’s FARC after the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia – People’s Army (FARC-EP) was rebranded as political party under the name Revolutionary Alternative Forces of Commons (FARC).
Luciano Marin was chosen to be the leader of the 111 member leadership group of the Revolutionary Alternative Forces of Commons which replaces the FARC-EP’s 61 member Central Command that was responsible for the FARC-EP leadership during its more than 5-decades-long armed struggle that came to an end with the signing of a peace accord and the demobilization and disarmament of guerrilla this year.
Luciano Marin has long held a central leadership role within the FARC-EP and he was widely considered as co-leader of Timoleon Jimenez a.k.a. Timochenko who assumed the FARC-EP’s leadership after the death of “Alfonso Cano” in 2011.
Luciano Marin was elected during the first session of the FARC’s “National Commons Council”. Jimenez still participates in the FARC leadership. Marin has played a lead role in the peace talks between the FARC-EP and the administration of Juan Manuel Santos. He has been proven himself as skillful negotiator and pragmatic politician.
Unofficial peace talks between the FARC-EP and the State began in 2010 and were held through 2011 until the launch of official peace talks from 2012 to 2016. In November 2016 the FARC-EP and the administration of President Juan Manuel Santos signed a historic peace accord that ended 52 years of armed conflict between the State and the FARC-EP.
Part of the peace accord was the transformation of the FARC-EP into a political party (now FARC), and political participation. Luciano Marin will probably be all too aware of the volatility of the peace and the FARC’s political role.
In 1986 Luciano Marin was elected to Congress for the Patriotic Union Party. The failed attempt to end the armed struggle and integrate FARC guerrilla into the non-militant political discourse ended in assassinations and massacres of FARC members and other leftist politicians, grassroots activists and community organizers.
The FARC has announced that it will seek an electoral alliance with the Communist Party in the 2018 elections. The FARC-EP and the Communist Party separated in 1993. A Gallup poll on Thursday showed that the FARC is “less unpopular” than any other political party. 84 percent viewed the FARC negatively while 87 percent had a negative view of other political parties.
The FARC announced that it will continue its “revolutionary” work by peaceful means and continue to be “the voice of the voiceless, the representative of the disenfranchised and marginalized”. In Marin’s own words, “We don’t want to break ties with our past. We have been and will continue to be a revolutionary organisation.”
