PARIS — French Presidential candidate Macron’s email system has evidently been breached by members of 4chan.

4chan, particularly a subsection of it called “/pol/”, is the same source of anonymous users who claimed to “meme Donald Trump into the White House” and in the past they have helped locate ISIS training camps that were previously hidden.

Thousands of documents — nine gigabytes’ worth — were dumped online, creating turmoil right as French voters are set to decide who will lead their country.

The documents are being combed through meticulously, as many believe they will reveal corruption and criminality in Macron’s network.

The situation is serious enough that French police have scrambled to locate the hackers and may be attempting to shut down access to 4chan from France.

The documents were passed along to Wikileaks for verification of authenticity:

Macron responded by claiming that he is a victim of a coordinated effort to spread false information about him.

While acknowledging some of the documents were authentic, he claimed that false information was inserted.

Tyler Durden of Zerohedge summarizes the situation as follows:

Then on Friday evening, Macron’s political party said its computer systems were hacked, after “thousands of emails and electronic documents purporting to come from the campaign were posted anonymously on the internet Friday evening.” According to the WSJ , the files had been obtained several weeks ago from the personal and work email accounts of party officials, according to a statement from Mr. Macron’s party, En Marche!, or On the Move. The file dump comes less than two days before the final round of France’s presidential race, which pits Mr. Macron against far-right nationalist Marine Le Pen.

“The En Marche! Movement has been the victim of a massive and co-ordinated hack this evening which has given rise to the diffusion on social media of various internal information,” the statement said.

The party said that the cache “includes both authentic and falsified documents with the goal of sowing doubt and disinformation,” which is another way of stating that anything that is potentially damaging will be claimed to the fake, while the innocuous documents are “authentic.”

4chan users have taunted the French police with statements like “we are the new government” and are certain that they won’t be shut down.

We will have more updates as the situation unfolds.
