McCain Touts Clinton-Russia Conspiracy Theory While Questioning Comey

During the Senate Intelligence Hearing involving former FBI director James Comey, Senator John McCain introduced a line of questioning that pandered to Donald Trump’s base, but crossed the line into alternative facts when he conflated 2 separate events in order to create a narrative about Hillary Clinton.

When McCain began questioning Comey, he started off with the subject of Clinton’s email server debacle that was settled by the FBI in July of last year. McCain claimed Comey said “there wasn’t sufficient evidence to bring a suit against [Clinton] although it had been very careless in their behavior.”

In a confusing run-on sentence, McCain went on to say to Comey: “…but you did reach a conclusion in that case that it was not necessary to further pursue her, yet at the same time in the case of Mr. Comey you said there’s not enough information to make a conclusion.”

Looking up, McCain remembered he was talking to Comey, and asked him to explain his “conclusion as far as former Secretary Clinton is concerned and… and Mr. Trump.”

This took Comey aback because it was clear that McCain was confusing the probe into Russia’s meddling in the last presidential election and the case into Clinton’s private email server which was closed in July of 2016.

The former FBI director reiterated the fact that “the Clinton investigation was a closed investigation” and the probe into Trump-Russia was “still going when [he] was fired.”

McCain continued to mesh the Trump-Russia probe with the Clinton email investigation by demanding Comey explain how he could “reach separate conclusions.”

He then launched into a full-blown conspiracy theory involving Clinton and possible collusion of her campaign with Russia’s attack on our election.

McCain said: “That investigation of any involvement of Secretary Clinton or any of her associates is completed. Well, at least in the mind of this member, there’s a whole lot of questions remaining about what went on, particularly, considering the fact that as you mentioned it a quote ‘big deal’ as to what went on during the campaign. I think the American people have a whole lot of questions about that particularly because you just emphasized the role Russia played.”

Continuing with his conspiracy theory, McCain said: “Obviously she was a candidate for president at the time, so she was clearly involved in this whole situation where fake news, as you just described it a ‘big deal’, took place.”

Comey respectfully tried to correct McCain, replying that the FBI concluded their investigation into Clinton’s private email server in July of 2016, which has nothing to do with the Trump-Russia probe. And also reiterated that Clinton and her campaign had nothing to do with Russia’s “fake news” campaign.

McCain interrupted Comey, claiming to understand the distinction, but proved he was still either confused or intent on pushing his conspiracy theory with his reply: “You made the announcement there would be no charges brought against then Secretary Clinton for any activities involved… in the Russia involvement in our… engagement in our election. I don’t quite understand how you can be done with that but not complete done with the whole investigation of their attempt to effect the outcome of our election.”

Comey immediately tried once more to gently correct McCain’s conflation of the on-going Trump-Russia probe and the closed case of Clinton’s private email server by saying that when he left the FBI “there was an active investigation to understand the Russian efforts and whether any Americans worked with them.”

But McCain insisted on his conspiracy theory that Clinton was working with the Russians during the 2016 election and added a twist: “But you reached a conclusion that there was no reason to bring charges Secretary Clinton. So you reached a conclusion. In the case of Mr. Comey… you… the president Comey… the case of President Trump you have an on-going investigation.”

Comey responded by clarifying AGAIN that the Clinton private email investigation was closed in July of 2015, and the probe into “Russian’s efforts in connection with the election, and whether there was any coordination, and if so with whom, between Russia was on-going when I left.”

McCain refused to let go of his conspiracy theory, using it as an excuse to infer that there was an FBI investigation into Clinton for possible collusion with Russia during the election when that on-going probe has always, and still is, centered on Trump’s advisers, campaign staffers and possibly Trump himself.

The senator said heatedly: “In fact, obviously there’s a lot more there as we know. She’s one of the candidates. But in her case, you say there will be no charges and the case of President Trump the investigation continues.”

Comey calmly, but forcefully responded that the FBI “has not announced and there was no predication to announce an investigation into whether Russians may have coordinated with Secretary Clinton’s campaign.”

McCain was clearly still confused because he interrupted Comey, arguing that “there may not have been involved with her campaign, but they were involved with the entire presidential campaign, obviously…. Both involved in the investigation and yet one of them you said there’s gonna be no charges and the other one that the investigation continues.”
