Mexican demonstrators use cardboard boxes to build symbolic wall.

The day after President Trump was inaugurated, Mexican demonstrators built a wall in Mexico City. The wall was made of cardboard boxes and built outside the U.S. Embassy. On top of the wall was an effigy of Donald Trump. The mock wall was constructed in protest of Trump’s policies regarding Mexico.

During the presidential campaign, the President called Mexican immigrants rapists and murderers and vowed to keep them out of the country by building a wall along the U.S. – Mexico border. He claimed the Mexican government would pay for the wall. There is also concern in Mexico over Trump’s campaign pledge to tear up the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) if a “fair deal” was not renegotiated. NAFTA is extremely important to the Mexican economy.

One of the protestors said, “We are against the construction of the wall and we’re marching because the Mexican government has not faced up to Donald Trump’s threats like the people have wanted. The (Trump) government says that Mexicans are going to pay for the building of the wall. What Mexicans are saying to Trump is that we do not agree with the construction of the wall.”

The protestors carried signs, one of which read “We are not rapists”. The wall was torn down and Trump’s effigy punched and eventually burned. A poll of 600 people conducted early in January by Gabinete de Communicacion Estrategice showed that more than 75% of Mexicans have a bad or very bad opinion of President Trump.
