nsnbc : Lebanon’s unicameral parliament, on Monday, elected the 81-year-old Christian General (ret) Michel Naim Aoun as the country’s new president. The office has been vacant since former president Michel Suleiman left office on May 25, 2014.
The 81-year-old retired general is the leader of Lebanon’s Free Patriotic Movement. Parliament vote twice. During the first round Aoun failed to secure the necessary two-third majority.
However, the second round of voting gave Aoun 83 votes and ended almost three years of political deadlock in Lebanon. Legislators repeatedly failed to agree on a presidential candidate who would be acceptable for both Muslim and Christian parties in Lebanon. The vote in the parliament had been put off 45 times due to the lack of a quorum.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad called his newly-elected Lebanese counterpart in a courtesy call, congratulated Michel Aoun on his election and underpinned the long-standing neighborly relations between the two countries.
French President Francois Hollande, for his part, also congratulated Aoun, underpinning ling historical (colonial and post-colonial) relations, and stressing that “France always is prepared to assist Lebanon is it is in need”. Among others who also made courtesy calls to Aoun were the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi.
