Monsanto’s Roundup causes birth defects. Cancer and DNA damage.

The Women’s Cancer Resource Center (WCRC) and CHOSE (Coalition for a Healthy Oakland School Environment), showed that chemicals such as Round-Up (glyphosate) can result in reproductive damage as well as damage to the kidney and liver, and some studies show a link between the chemical and cancer.
(Chemical Injury Network, June 2001)
Glyphosate (Roundup) is one of the most toxic herbicides, and is the third most commonly reported cause of pesticide related illness among agricultural workers. Products containing glyphosate also contain other compounds, which can be toxic. Glyphosate is technically extremely difficult to measure in environmental samples, which means that data is often lacking on residue levels in food and the environment, and existent data may not be reliable.
(“Greenpeace Report – Not ready for Roundup: Glyphosate Fact Sheet,” greenpeace.org – April 1997)
Glyphosate is found in weed killers and may cause cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, nerve, and respiratory damage.

Monsanto isn’t going to like this ( 6) Print This ShareThis

Monsanto’s Roundup brand herbicide causes birth defects.

A new report written by some top scientists has stated – without caveats – that Monsanto’s Roundup brand herbicide causes birth defects.

Monsanto’s business model is based entirely on Roundup – including the genetically modified (GMO) crops that are dominant in the United States and, to a lesser degree, Canada. So far, Europeans have been slow to adopt the so-called Frankenfoods; but Monsanto owns the Third World.

The recent report was prepared by a diverse group of scientists from various countries and their findings are damning. The report is very long, so it is not reproduced here, but a link is provided below. Some of the key accusations in the report include:

  • Monsanto (and other providers) have known since at least the 1980s that glyphosate (the active ingredient in this stuff) causes malformations in test animals when used at high dosage. They’ve also known since 1993 that these same deformities can occur at low and mid-level doses
  • The government of Germany has known since at least 1998 that glyphosate causes malformations
  • The European Union Commission’s expert scientific review panel knew as early as 1999 that glyphosate causes malformations
  • The EU Commission itself – not just the scientists – has known about this since 2002

The new report, entitled Roundup and birth defects: Is the public being kept in the dark?, includes technical detail to show how regulators went out of their way to discount the studies that produced those early findings, and to make it appear there were no problems with Roundup.

Part of the problem is that governments have frequently relied on testing conducted or sponsored by manufacturers themselves. The studies are done as cheaply as possible, so they use only a few test animals and very high doses. Companies like Monsanto can then claim the doses were so high that ‘of course there would be toxicity, but there is no evidence of toxicity at low doses’. That’s similar to the tobacco companies arguing their products are safe because of all the smokers who don’t die from them.

So how much of an issue is this? Well, in North America Roundup and Roundup Ready crops are everywhere. Substantial residues have been detected in various crops, farmworkers are exposed in the fields, homeowners who try to have golf-green lawns expose themselves and their neighbours, roads departments spray it in ditches to control weeds.

Farmers use Roundup Ready seeds because they are less work than conventional seeds. Despite Monsanto’s advertising, the crop yields aren’t any greater, just less work for the farmer and more profit for Monsanto. Of course, Monsanto doesn’t mention in their advertising that superweeds have already developed immunity to Roundup.

Paul, as you say yourself,”the Monsanto-infested Obama administration” is one of the VERY big problems. The revolving door policies. Horrifying decisions by the Obama administration to put a man like Michael Taylor in the position of the deputy commissioner for foods at the Food and Drug Administration. That is how Monsanto has been allowed to conduct their own tests! The fox guarding the hen house indeed! And when the results of their own tests appear worrisome, they drop them. It’s been done again and again. And they declare a clean sheet of course. No more need for extended tests. Based on NOTHING their products are declared perfectly safe and negative results silenced and ignored.Reality has nothing to do with the way Roundup Ready and Monsanto GM seeds have been allowed to poison the soil, the environment and the people. Corporate greed is the only thing that matters here. Under the Bush and now the Obama administration Monsanto has for ever been allowed to get away with murder – literally. In India the results of the GM freeway to biochemical destruction of age-old biodiversity and organic farming have had such catastrophic results that thousands of farmers commit suicide EVERY YEAR. They are bankrupted by increased spending on government-pushed use of GM seeds, followed by increased spending on pesticides and fertilizers. To that comes the increased need of irrigation and so the desertification of the soil and generalized ruin of the ecosystem. There is enormous pressure from Washington on the EU to legalize the use of genetically modified seeds and products. May they stay clear of this corrupt poison! But, as you say, the damage has already been done to the U.S. and to the third world.
There is also a BIG legal dispute about the labeling of foods as being non GMO or milk as being non rBGH (bovine growth hormone) can be declared legal or not. This crucial matter is legally determined state by state. There is good news form Ohio and several other states. May the good news spread.

Here in Canada rBGH milk is illegal, never mind just the labels. For some reason, we’re apparently smart enough to avoid that crap.

“That’s similar to the tobacco companies arguing their products are safe because of all the smokers who don’t die from them.”
What it’s exactly like is pharma propaganda! It’s always about profits, this time pharma’s, at the expense of smokers who just want to be left alone! Now the gov’t wants to tax food, soda, and water. And the people will be screaming for their freedom to chose. Maybe they should have spoken up when the smokers were targeted!
This all lands on the heads of incompetent legislators falling for pharma’s marketing scams for their own brand of nicotine! A decrease in the number of smokers has increased the incidence of chilhood asthma by 500%. The revelation that tobacco is good for you is reported in non-mainstream media: An Owensboro bioprocessing group is working on a vaccine for the human papillomavirus that’s made with tobacco protein. Smoking lowers Parkinson’s disease risk associated with non-smoking, protects against Alzheimer’s Disease and ulcerative Colitis. Children of mothers who smoke 15 cigarettes a day tend to have lower odds for suffering from allergic rhino-conjunctivitis, allergic asthma, atopic eczema, food allergy, compared to children of mothers who never smoked.‘Villain’ nicotine slays TB. Carbon Monoxide May Alleviate Heart Attacks And Stroke, carbon monoxide’s a by-product of tobacco smoke. Smoking Prevents Rare Skin Cancer, reduces The Risk Of Breast Cancer. Tourette’s Syndrome, schizophrenia and cocaine addiction are disorders that are alleviated by tobacco. Big pharma knows all of this, it’s all about wiping out the competition and money!

Thanks for this article, it has led me to download the full report to read off-line. For sometime I have been concern by the ease that the WeedKiller Roundup could be purchased in hardware stores. Letters to the store and its owners have not worked. There has to be an international ban on this product and we also have to mention that Monsanto, along with other companbies, was also responsible for Agent Orange used on Vietnam for ten-years from 10th August 1961, resulting in the deaths of many thousands and the birth of deformed children. Today Vietnam has near to four million people of all ages affected by Agent Orange.Their products have to be banned.

marbee – Your saying “A decrease in the number of smokers has increased the incidence of chilhood asthma by 500%.” reminds me of the so-called statistics that claimed that the increase in the number of television sets in the USSR corresponded to the no of increase of cancer. :-(Sources please. And lots of them – reliable ones!

The word is out. If there is even a suspicion of birth defects, the product should be pulled. If there is even a suspicion that a product contributes to decline of bees, it must be pulled. Instead we sent it around the world. End Roundup, and GMOs while we still can.
