Morsi downplays Egypt economic crisis

“General indicators for the social and economic situation have shown some noticeable progress,” the Egyptian president said during a televised Saturday speech before the newly-empowered Upper House of parliament.

Morsi added that the country’s economy has grown by 2.6 percent in the third quarter of 2012.

This is while earlier this week Standard & Poor’s (S&P) ratings agency slashed Egypt’s long-term credit rating to “B-“.

The North African country’s economy nosedived after the revolution that toppled former dictator Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

The Egyptian president went on to say that, “All are equal before the law, and in this constitution,” adding that the charter would ensure “freedom for all people, with no exceptions.”

On December 25, Morsi signed the decree that puts into effect the constitution which 63.8 percent of Egyptians voted in favor of in a referendum.

Egypt’s charter grants the parliament’s Upper House full legislative powers for the first time in 32 years.
