Moscow Spectacularly Silent About Israel’s “Red Lines”

Fahwad Al-Khadoumi (nsnbc) : Russian State media are spectacularly silent about Israel’s “Red Lines” expressed by Israeli PM Benyamin Netanyahu during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Not one word about Moscow using its mandate as permanent Security Council member about ending Israel’s illegal occupation of the Golan Heights, followed by remarks about Russia’s support for the Israeli – Palestinian “peace process” that has been ongoing for decades without bringing any “peace”.

The otherwise eloquent and media conscious Russian President Vladimir Putin failed as spectacularly at making a statement about Israel’s illegal occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights and Israel’s illegal de facto annexation of most of the Palestinian West Bank and East Jerusalem, as his colleagues from fellow permanent UN Security Council members USA, UK, France, and China.

All that the Russian State news agency Tass had to report about the meeting between Netanyahu and Putin was that Israel prioritized the “absence of a new terrorist front in the Golan Heights and the fact that Hezbollah has no modern weapons to be “red lines” of its security. The agency quotes Netanyahu as saying:

“Firstly, we are doing everything that depends on us to prevent the emergence of ultra-modern weapons in the hands of Hezbollah, which get there from Syria and Iraq. Secondly, we are doing everything to prevent the appearance of an additional terror front against us in the Golan Heights,” Netanyahu said. “This is the red line we have identified.”

Netanyahu continued, saying that the Golan heights will “remain a part of Israel. …With an agreement or without, the Golan Heights will remain part of [Israel’s] sovereign. I have come here with the main goal — to increase coordination between us in the security area in order to prevent various mistakes, misunderstanding and incidents.”

The statement went unchallenged by President Putin, whose obligation as President of a permanent UN Security Council member it would have been to, at the very least, stress the illegality of the annexation of the Golan Heights.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s statement that Russia supports the Israeli – Palestinian “peace process” cannot modify the fact that Russia failed the Litmus Test as UN Security Council member as spectacularly as it was forecast by nsnbc editor-in-chief Christof Lehmann in his article entitled “Russia, Israel and the Syrian Golan: A Litmus Test for Russia as Security Council Member“.
