TCP : The mother of a 17-year-old female genital mutilation (FGM) victim and the anesthetist who was part of the medical team, were arrested by the prosecution Tuesday for manslaughter, Youm7 reported.

“[FGM] is a crime, so when a child dies as a result it is not an accidental homicide. Accidental homicide applies when a doctor intervenes with a legitimate, legally sanctioned action and the person dies as a result,” said Adel Ramadan, senior lawyer at Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights in a Tuesday statement.
“But when a doctor intentionally causes an injury without a legitimate cause—when the intervention is, in fact, a crime—and it results in death, this is properly the crime of causing a lethal injury,” the lawyer added.
The mother, a nurse, had been detained but released on the day her daughter, Mayar Mohamed, was buried. The doctor who performed the operation, reportedly a famous surgeon in Suez, is now wanted by the police but still at large.
The defendants include five other doctors and officials at the privately-owned hospital where the operation was carried out on 17-year old twin sisters, killing one.
The anesthetist denied he had learned it was a circumcision operation and blamed Mohamed’s death on the female doctor being pursued by the police.
